Inaugural Excellence in Rural Journalism Awards

These awards recognise members who are leaders in Australia’s rural media sector. Winners of these awards will be eligible to qualify for the Australian Council for Agricultural Journalists professional awards.

Overarching Winner (up to $5000)*

Criteria

Out of our four category winners, there will be an overall winner who will be awarded up to $5,000 to attend the International Federation of Agricultural Journalists Congress in Denmark from 24-29 June 2020. The theme for the Congress will be “Farming Today for the Society of Tomorrow.”

The Congress provides professional development and international networking opportunities for agricultural journalists and communicators.

Submission process

  • Entrants must be members of the National Rural Press Club.
  • Winner will be selected from category winner.
  • Entry to be accompanied by an executive summary of no more than 200 words.
  • Copies or links of news items must be included including audio and broadcast clips.
  • Applications close 6 November 2019.

*Note: The overarching entry winner may be submitted to the Australian Council of Agricultural Journalists professional awards which offers attendance to the International Federation of Agricultural Journalists Congress. If the National Rural Press Club winner is also a national winner, the travel bursary will go to the National Rural Press Club runner up.

Best News Coverage ($1000) – sponsored by Westpac

Criteria

An agricultural, rural, or regional news story presented across any medium with a connection to the Canberra region. The connection should be the subject matter or where the journalist is located.

Judged on newsworthiness, style, content, objectivity, balance and impact.

The entry can be a series of news articles on the same subject matter – i.e. an investigative piece.

  • Entry to be accompanied by an executive summary of no more than 200 words.

Best Interview ($1000) – sponsored by Animal Medicines Australia

Criteria

An interview published across any medium of a rural, agricultural or regional subject with a connection to the Canberra region. The connection should be the subject matter or where the journalist is located.

Best Photograph ($1000) – sponsored by CASE IH

Criteria

A photograph published across any medium primarily of a rural, agricultural or regional subject with a connection to the Canberra region. The connection should be the subject matter or where the journalist is located.

Entries must be an individual photograph, however, the submitted work may be extracted from a photographic feature or series.

Judging according to impact, technical application and relevance.

Best Feature ($1000) – sponsored by CropLife Australia

Criteria

One feature article across any medium of one subject of a rural, agricultural or regional nature with a connection to the Canberra region. The connection should be the subject matter or where the journalist is located.

The article or segment should be both detailed and easy to read or listen to and have a minimum word count of 800, minimum broadcast time eight minutes.

This is not necessarily first page news, however, must be considered best practice journalism to reward research, story development, consideration of task and crafting of final piece. Content may cover topics such as human interest, on-farm features, sport or other relevant rural or regional issues, including agriculture. It should be an in-depth story, enabling the audience to gain a clear understanding of the issue that a single news story can provide.
